I’m Mad About the Miller Lite Ad, But Not for the Reason You Think

After the whole Bud Light debacle, a Miller Lite ad from March resurfaced. It features a woman I’m told is a famous comedian explaining that, historically, women did most of the work behind brewing beer, and “to repay them” the beer industry sexualized and objectified women.

To right these evils of knowing your key demographic, Miller Lite is “buying the old sh*t” to “make new sh*t.” They describe the process:

  1. Buy old sexist advertising materials
  2. Compost it
  3. Use the compost to grow hops
  4. Donate the hops to lady-led breweries

Which, in terms of empowerment, at least has a measurable impact. So in theory I don’t hate it. The virtue signaling is irksome, but at this point in 2023 it’s really a matter of degrees since it’s pretty much ubiquitous now.

That being said, I still hate this. Because, uh, that’s not how composting works.

Compost is “decayed organic material used as fertilizer.” Not only does it have to be organic, it has to be raw. Miller Lite is buying up the “old sh*t,” which, correct me if I’m wrong, is mostly going to be dyed paper, plastic, metal– basically the opposite of organic, raw material.

THAT SH*T DON’T COMPOST.

Were we not supposed to notice that? I’m insulted that they thought I mightn’t. So insulted, in fact, that I might be pushed to do something drastic, like stop buying Miller Lite. The only problem there is that I don’t buy it in the first place.

Bullet dodged, I guess?

So now I have to be ultra beer snob as I can’t buy anything that’s not a craft brew…

    So my life won’t change?
